Bridging the Map Gap: Navigating with Printed and Digital

These days, navigation apps like Gaia, AllTrails, and Avenza have become a pretty common part of how trekkers move through the bush. They’re handy, familiar, and packed with features. For a lot of trekkers, they’ve become the main way of keeping track of where they are.

That said, when I talk to trekkers or look at how gear gets used on the Stirling Ridge, it’s clear that printed maps, especially large scale ones tailored to the track, don’t always make it into the backpack. Sometimes it’s because trekkers don’t know how to get their GPX file into a printable format. Sometimes they don’t have access to an A3 or A2 printer. And sometimes it’s just that they’ve never seen how much easier it can be to interpret terrain when it’s spread out in front of you rather than pinched and zoomed on a phone.

To be clear, this isn’t about choosing one over the other. It’s about noticing where the gaps are. Especially when the goal is learning to read the terrain, recall decision points, and reflect on how you moved through the landscape. A printed map does something different. It slows you down just enough to think clearly, to trace what happened and what’s coming next. After the walk, it gives you a visual memory of the place that tends to stick.

For some, that might be obvious. For others, it’s new. Either way, it’s worth looking at how both tools, digital and printed, can work together.

Printed vs Digital Maps: What Actually Matters

Not every map is equally useful once it’s printed. Some, like Gaia, hold up well when you scale them to A3 or A2. The contours stay legible. The track is visible. The whole thing makes sense. Others, like some of the Landgate series, can become a mess once you start working with them in the field. Contour lines clump together. The shading that seems helpful can turn into clutter. And perhaps most frustrating, the Stirling Ridge Walk track is not shown.

Landgate topographic maps are available digitally as print enabled PDFs in a range of scales, including 1:25,000, 1:50,000 and 1:100,000. They provide authoritative topographic information and are valuable general purpose maps, but they are not specifically designed for navigating the Stirling Ridge Walk. The absence of the ridge route itself is an important limitation. You need to interpret the contours and surrounding terrain without having the route shown as a reference, and depending on the scale and map sheet, the amount of topographic information can also make the map quite visually dense when used in the field.

Digital maps can be deceiving. Zooming in on a phone makes everything look sharp and readable, but that doesn’t always hold up when you print. A layout that looked clear on screen can end up cramped or unreadable on paper, especially if the scale isn’t suited to the level of detail.

This is where physical map skills come back into play. Reading UTM grid lines. Understanding real distance. Holding the paper and seeing how the land is laid out before you. A well made printed map can do more than help you relocate yourself. It can show you what’s coming. It can help you plan. And it can keep you thinking ahead, rather than catching up.

 Understanding Digital Navigation Apps and Printable Maps

Some navigation apps give you more than just a blue dot. They let you record your track, drop waypoints, and overlay different types of terrain or satellite imagery. On the screen, they’re great for real time positioning. You can check where you are, how far you’ve come, and get a quick sense of elevation and direction.

But the real advantage comes when you use these tools to create something physical. Most of these apps allow you to export a section of your route as a PDF. You can include the track, your labelled waypoints, and any notes you’ve added. Then you print it out, ideally at A3 or larger, so you can actually read it in the field.

Maps like these work especially well on the Stirling Ridge Walk. You can tailor them to each stage of the walk. The track is clear. Key decisions can be marked. And you’re not stuck trying to fit the whole route onto one crowded sheet. Instead, you get a clean, readable map that reflects the way you actually move through the terrain.

It took me a good three or four years to properly get my head around the full sequence of terrain features on the ridge. I’d forget the order of the saddles, confuse the approach to certain knolls, or lose track of which climb came before which turn. What changed that was sitting down with detailed, printed maps, ones that had the track laid out clearly, along with my own annotations. Once I had those in front of me, the whole walk started to make more sense. That’s when things began to stick.

What surprised me was how different it felt once I actually had a printed map in my hand, one that I’d made myself, not just some generic sheet. It changed the way I looked at the landscape. I wasn’t just checking my phone anymore. I started recognising features ahead of time, noticing where decisions were coming up, and connecting what I saw on paper with what I was walking through. It felt more natural. Like I was actually getting to know the ridge, not just following a track.
