1. Purpose of this Disclaimer

The Stirling Ridge Walk Map, this website and associated material are intended to assist with planning, understanding the landscape and learning navigation principles. They do not remove the risks inherent in remote bushwalking or replace the user's own preparation, observation, judgement and navigation skills.

This Disclaimer should be read together with CarterGraphy's Terms & Conditions and any safety information, warnings or notices accompanying the map or website.

2. Nature of the Stirling Ridge Walk

The Stirling Ridge Walk passes through remote, rugged and potentially hazardous mountain terrain. Conditions can be difficult and may change rapidly. Hazards may include steep or exposed terrain, cliffs and rock, loose surfaces, difficult route-finding, dense or changing vegetation, heat, cold, wind, rain, poor visibility, fire, dehydration and delayed access to assistance.

Every walker is responsible for assessing whether the walk, route and prevailing conditions are suitable for their own experience, fitness, equipment and navigation ability, and for the capabilities of anyone for whom they are responsible.

3. The Printed Map is a Navigation Aid

The Stirling Ridge Walk Map is intended to assist navigation and route planning, but no printed map can represent every feature or every change occurring on the ground.

Tracks, informal pads, vegetation, access arrangements, closures, signage, water availability, fire impacts, erosion, rockfall and other environmental or management conditions may change after publication.

The map should therefore be used as one source of navigation information together with current official information, observation of the terrain, appropriate navigation skills and other suitable navigation resources.

4. Navigation Teaching Material Throughout This Website

Navigation teaching material appearing anywhere on the CarterGraphy website is provided for education, illustration and demonstration purposes. This applies regardless of the page, section, photograph, diagram, article or other part of the website in which the material appears.

Unless CarterGraphy expressly identifies particular information as current navigational information intended for field use, all coordinates, grid references, eastings and northings, latitude and longitude values, elevations or altitudes, bearings, back bearings, directions, distances, angles, waypoints, Navigation Points, plotted positions, routes and other numerical navigation information appearing in teaching material must be treated as illustrative teaching material only.

Do not use teaching values to determine your position, select a route, locate a feature, follow a bearing or otherwise navigate the Stirling Ridge Walk.

Maps and map extracts, aerial images, photographs, compass illustrations, bearing lines, contour diagrams, elevation profiles, resection and modified-resection examples, triangulation examples, GPS examples and other graphics may be simplified, rounded, modified or constructed specifically to demonstrate a navigation principle. They must not be assumed to depict precise field geometry, measurements or current conditions.

The fact that teaching material uses a real location, real landscape feature, photograph, map or realistic and precise-looking value does not mean that the information is suitable for field navigation.

Reading or viewing CarterGraphy's navigation teaching material does not constitute an assessment or certification of a user's competence to perform the demonstrated techniques in the field.

5. Navigation Points, Bearings and Directions

Navigation Points, bearings, directions, route lines, waypoints, coordinates, grid references, distances, elevations and other positional information appearing in navigation teaching material anywhere on this website are for teaching and illustrative purposes only unless CarterGraphy expressly identifies the particular information as current navigational information intended for field use.

Bearings and directions shown in relation to Navigation Points must not be relied upon as instructions for field navigation. They may have been selected, simplified, rounded, modified or presented specifically to demonstrate a navigation principle.

Before acting on any bearing, direction, coordinate, waypoint or other positional information, users must verify their own position and independently confirm the required direction through their own observations, compass measurements, map interpretation and assessment of the actual terrain and conditions on the ground.

A Navigation Point, bearing or direction shown on the website does not remove the need for the user to identify the terrain, determine their own position and make their own navigational decisions in the field.

6. Coordinates, Grid References, Bearings and Elevations

Particular care must be taken with numerical navigation information. A small error in a coordinate, grid reference, bearing, distance or elevation can produce a significant difference in position or route choice.

Teaching examples may use realistic locations or values so that a technique can be demonstrated clearly. The fact that a value appears realistic, precise or geographically plausible does not make it suitable for field navigation.

Users must independently obtain and verify appropriate current navigation information before relying on coordinates, grid references, latitude or longitude, bearings, elevations, waypoints or other numerical data in the field.

7. Accuracy, GPS Measurements, Waypoints and Field Verification

CarterGraphy has made reasonable and substantial efforts to ensure the accuracy of the Stirling Ridge Walk Map and associated information, including through field observations, GPS measurements, recorded waypoints and the checking of mapped features and positions.

However, no map, GPS measurement, waypoint, coordinate, bearing or other navigational information should be treated as infallible. GPS accuracy can vary, mapping and measurement errors can occur, and terrain, vegetation, tracks, access and environmental conditions may change over time.

A bearing calculated or measured from a map must never be followed in isolation from the terrain and conditions actually observed in the field.

A bearing provides a direction. It does not establish that the terrain along that direction is safe, accessible or appropriate to travel through. Cliffs, rock faces, dense vegetation, unstable ground, changed tracks, environmental hazards or other obstacles may make the apparent line of travel unsuitable or unsafe.

Users must continually compare the map and any calculated bearing with their own observations, compass measurements, position checks, terrain interpretation and the conditions actually encountered on the ground.

Where the terrain does not correspond with what you expect from the map or a calculated bearing, do not simply continue following the bearing. Stop, reassess your position, examine the surrounding terrain, verify your measurements and determine an appropriate course of action before proceeding.

The map should inform your interpretation of the terrain; it should never replace it.

8. GPS, Electronic Devices and Positioning

GPS receivers, phones, watches, mapping applications and other electronic navigation devices can be useful aids but may be affected by device failure, battery depletion, software or data errors, poor reception, user error and differences between mapping or coordinate systems.

No GPS position, waypoint, electronic track or device should be assumed to be infallible. Users should understand the equipment and coordinate system they are using and carry suitable backup navigation resources appropriate to the conditions and remoteness of the walk.

9. Accuracy and Changing Information

CarterGraphy makes reasonable efforts to prepare useful and accurate material, but cannot guarantee that every map feature, description, photograph, coordinate, elevation, route depiction, track condition or other item of information will remain accurate, complete or current.

Information may become outdated because of environmental change, land-management decisions, closures, fire, storms, vegetation growth, erosion, altered tracks or other circumstances outside CarterGraphy's control.

Where CarterGraphy becomes aware of a significant correction or update, it may publish updated information on the website or communicate with purchasers where reasonably practicable.

10. Third-Party Information and Links

The website may refer or link to information provided by government agencies, land managers, weather services, mapping providers or other third parties. CarterGraphy does not control third-party websites or guarantee that third-party information will remain available, accurate or current.

Users should consult the relevant original source where current official information is important to a decision.

11. Limitation of Liability and Consumer Rights

To the extent permitted by law, CarterGraphy does not accept responsibility for loss, injury, damage, delay or expense arising from reliance on information that is inaccurate, incomplete, outdated, misunderstood or used for a purpose for which it was not intended, including the use of Navigation teaching material as field navigation data.

Nothing in this Disclaimer is intended to exclude, restrict or modify any right, guarantee, remedy or liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, restricted or modified, including rights that may apply under the Australian Consumer Law.
