Section 7: Printed Maps as a Core Navigation Aid on the SRW

Navigation on the SRW is not about bush bashing toward a bearing on the far side of the range. It is about staying on the track. Not just because it is easier or faster, but because that is where you are meant to be. The route was put in for a reason. It threads through terrain that would otherwise be difficult or impractical to move through, and it reflects countless decisions made by those who have walked it before.

Printed maps that clearly show the track give you something solid to work with when things go slightly off. If you have drifted from the line, or visibility drops for a while, a well marked paper map helps you reposition. You do not need to guess a bearing and hope for the best. You need to relocate yourself back onto the line you are meant to be following.

The SRW demands this style of navigation. It is not simply about getting from point A to point B. It is about staying on the route that works. Trying to correct by cutting across the bush may eventually get you back on line, but it can also mean forcing your way through scrub, unstable ground, or terrain that is much more awkward and exposed than it first appears. Even light push bashing off track can contribute to avoidable disturbance, and in sensitive areas it also increases the risk of spreading dieback through soil movement and foot traffic.

The further you drift from the track, the harder it can be to relocate cleanly. It can also make it much more difficult for others to work out where you are if something goes wrong. In a rescue situation, being somewhere close to the known route is very different from being well off line in broken terrain.

What makes printed maps especially valuable is how they work with memory and terrain awareness. Over time, you begin to recognise the shape of a saddle, the line of a ridgeline, or the feel of a knoll underfoot, and connect it with what you have seen on the map. That feedback between map, memory, and terrain becomes a far more dependable guide than simply following a moving dot on a screen.

A printed map also encourages a different pace of thinking. It helps you pause, look around, and make more deliberate decisions. It keeps you engaged with the terrain rather than locked into a screen. On a walk like the SRW, that can make a real difference.


Skills That Printed Maps Teach Better Than Screens

Printed maps offer a tactile, zoomed out view of the SRW that digital screens cannot replicate. One of the most useful habits they encourage is learning to judge real distances from UTM grid spacing. On some map panels, a known ground distance can be read very quickly from the grid, and over time that trains your eye to recognise what 250 metres, 500 metres, or 1 kilometre actually looks like on the page. Instead of constantly checking a device, you begin to build an instinctive feel for distance across the terrain.

Printed maps also sharpen your ability to interpret the shape of the land from contour lines. Rather than just reading an elevation figure from a screen, you begin to see how the ground is likely to rise, fall, narrow, or broaden ahead of you. Saddles, knolls, summit areas, side spurs, and steeper pinches become easier to anticipate before you reach them. That kind of terrain reading develops gradually, especially when you mark up a map with your own notes, timings, and observations from the walk itself.

Another strength of printed maps is that they help break the route into practical stages without losing sight of the overall traverse. You might think of a long section in broad terms, such as moving from Ellen Peak toward Third Arrow Cave, but within that larger stretch the walk is usually experienced in smaller and more immediate segments. A printed map helps you see both levels at once. It lets you think in terms of the next saddle, the next rise, the next turn off, or the next 250 to 500 metres, while still keeping the larger route in context.

That is especially useful on the SRW, where navigation often depends on staying oriented through a sequence of smaller features rather than simply moving toward one distant objective. A printed map supports that kind of micro planning. You might be aiming first for a nearby saddle, then the next rise beyond it, then the line leading toward a more obvious landmark. At the same time, the wider layout of the map reminds you where those smaller goals sit within the day as a whole.

Printed maps also encourage memory in a different way. Because you see more of the route at once, you start to remember how sections relate to each other spatially. You remember that one knoll sat just before a saddle, or that a particular rise led into a broader open section of ridge. That kind of spatial memory is harder to build when you are looking at a small screen that only ever shows a narrow slice of the route.

In that sense, printed maps do more than help you navigate. They teach you to observe distance, shape, sequence, and terrain relationship in a more deliberate way. Over time, those are the skills that make movement through the ridge calmer, more confident, and less dependent on constantly checking a device.
