Section 6: GPS Track to Printed Map

One of the most useful developments for the Stirling Ridge Walk has been moving beyond a simple GPS track and turning route data into a purpose built printed map. The idea is straightforward in principle, even though the finished result can become quite sophisticated.

It often begins with a recorded track, whether that is one you have walked yourself or one you have obtained from another source. That track can then be brought into mapping software and used as the backbone for a much more detailed printed map. Rather than relying on a basic exported PDF from a phone app, the route can be positioned over proper terrain data, contours, grid lines, labels, and other map elements, allowing the final product to be designed specifically for navigation on the ground.

There is also a more accessible version of this process that many walkers can do themselves. A user can load a GPX file into an app such as Gaia, then start refining their own working map by comparing the track against aerial or satellite imagery, checking how well the recorded line matches the visible terrain, and adjusting their interpretation accordingly. From there, they can add their own waypoints, wrong turn markers, camps, water notes, side routes, and other reference points. Depending on the platform and export options, contour lines and other overlays can also be brought in to give a much clearer sense of how the route relates to the landscape.

That can be especially useful where a raw GPX line does not sit perfectly on the ground features or where the route through a section is clearer when viewed against aerial imagery. In that sense, a GPX file is not always the finished answer. It can be a starting line that the user improves by checking it against other visual and terrain information.

From there, the map can be developed well beyond the original GPX line. Decision points, side routes, escape options, water notes, camps, landmarks, distances between key points, and time estimates can all be added in a deliberate and readable way. Instead of treating the GPS track as the finished map, it becomes the starting point for building something far more useful.

A quick word of caution still applies when working from any GPX file, especially one recorded by someone else. A digital track is never perfectly exact. GPS recordings can be offset by several metres or more depending on the device, reception, terrain, and conditions at the time. That means a GPX file should be treated as a valuable guide, but not as unquestionable truth. Cross checking against terrain, aerial imagery, personal knowledge, and repeated observation is often what turns a rough route line into a dependable printed map.

One of the main advantages of building a map this way is that it does not need to be forced into a single generic format. Different sections can be shown at different scales, larger sheets can be folded into a field friendly form, and the layout can be designed around how the route is actually walked. Broader panels can show the overall line of the ridge, while more detailed panels can zoom in on sections where navigation is more complex or terrain interpretation matters more.

If durability matters, the finished map can also be printed professionally in a format suited to field use. Rather than relying on a standard paper printout or a laminated sheet that becomes awkward to handle, a purpose made map can be printed double sided, folded to pocket size, and produced on waterproof stock that holds up far better in real conditions.

What makes this approach so effective is that it combines the strengths of digital route recording with the clarity and reliability of a well designed printed map. A generic app view can show where a track goes, but a purpose built printed map can do much more. It can show how that line relates to the terrain, where the key decisions are, what features matter most, and how different sections of the ridge fit together.

For the Stirling Ridge Walk, that has made a major difference. A route that might begin as a simple GPX file can be developed into a map that is easier to read, easier to carry, and much better suited to planning, navigation, and understanding the terrain as a whole.
